Boiler and Central Heating Controls
e3 = ECONOMICAL - ENERGY - EFFICIENCY
An alternative to replacing your boiler:-
If you Like your old existing reliable boiler? And want to make your Central Heating System more energy efficient overall:-
The old controls in your heating system can be replaced with new (AD being control specialists will provide you with the best option that suits you) reliable, user friendly ones that will improve the overall Energy Efficiency of your System.
Just let us replace the old controls and service your system, and then your boiler will be even more reliable, green and money efficient than it ever was before. (The Boiler itself will not be as efficient than a new Condensing Boiler. However, we are talking here about improving the existing efficiency of the whole system that you are currently running. And in many/most cases that can be achieved without replacing the Boiler if you prefer not to do so, and to run with the existing Boiler for some time longer). However, the most energy efficient thing to do is to upgrade the system complete with a new Boiler, but not everybody wishes to do that until their old boiler can’t really be repaired &/or it isn’t broken down yet anyway. (e.g. we recently, in 2007, repaired a 38 year old Gas Boiler located in a customers kitchen. He had chosen to still keep it going for as long as he can. Most companies refused to repair this boiler for him as it was too old, yet we found that we could obtain the required part, repaired it, and it is still running safely). Yes here there may be a saving in fuel if he were to replace the boiler with a new High Efficiency Boiler, but it is his decision until the day comes to have to replaced. If you find that you too require to replace your boiler with a High Efficiency Condensing Boiler at a later date? Then please ensure that you do upgrade your Heating system in the following ways, to enable your system to run as efficiently as possible; (until one week, month, year or decade or so later you choose to replace the boiler), so in the meantime don’t hesitate to improve on the overall energy efficiency and safety of your existing system:-

N.B. all of the following advice and recommendations apply to all types of Wet Central Heating Systems whether they be existing: Standard Boilers or Combination (Combi’ Boilers). Any differences between the types will be emphasised further below:-

Ensure that you/your:

1. Have regular 12 monthly Servicing, a Report Sheet and the Service logged into your Boiler Log Book (if you require a Boiler Log Book; AD can supply one Free of Charge with the 1st Service you book in with us, each Log Book has room for 10 years worth of Servicing before a new Boiler Log Book is issued).

2. Heating System Primary Water is analysed to ensure that it is

a) clean,

b) has the correct dosage of Central Heating Inhibitor in it (which helps to ensure that corrosion and the build up of Sludge and air/gases does not occur). When AD perform 12 monthly servicing we check the condition of your Heating System Primary Water as a routine. AD offer the service of Power Flushing (which will ensure the cleansing of all your systems pipe-work, radiators and includes all the cleaning chemicals and the final dosage of Central Heating Inhibitor which will help keep your system from excessive corrosion and sludge build up).

For Combination Boiler Systems (which instantly heat up the water to feed the hot taps as it passes through the Boiler)

2 c) also ensure that the Domestic Hot Water Heat Exchanger is not scaled up. If it is, then have it de-scaled &/or replaced with a new one, together with a Power Flush (see No. 2b above). Also to help prevent the build up of scale on the Domestic Hot Water Heat Exchanger in the 1st place, it is advisable to have either a Water Softener or a Lime-Scale Reducer installed. (See No 4 below)

3. Controls are in place for Comfort & Economy

3 a) Common to both systems are that all Radiators (except the one that is the nearest to the Room Thermostat) should have Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV’s) installed.

For Standard Boiler Systems (with Hot Water Storage i.e. a Hot Water Cylinder and a Cold Water Header Tank)

3 b) Ensure that your system is a Fully Pumped system (or upgrade to this if not already). Old Gravity feed systems for Hot Water are much less efficient to run than a fully pumped system. A fully Pumped system should have a user friendly two channel Programmer/Timer (C. Heating & Hot Water), Room Thermostat, Cylinder Thermostat, Wiring Centre, Control Valves/s and an Automatic By-pass between flow and return pipework.(AD specialise in providing these upgrades; thus making your system more economical and safer in use).

For Combination Boiler Systems (which instantly heat up the water to feed the hot taps as it passes through the Boiler)

3 c) Ensure that either

i) your Boiler has an integral Programmer/Timer and a Room Thermostat to allow you to control your desired Room Temperature, or

ii) that you have a Room Thermostat in position (allowing you to control your desired Room Temperature) and that it is of the Programmable type. (AD can supply and install you with a choice of either Hard Wired or a Radio Frequency type in a very user friendly format).

4. Controlling the Condition of both Primary Heating/Radiator Water & Secondary/Potable Tap water (The correct control of this will effect Comfort, Economy and also Safety)

The Primary Water has been mentioned in depth (See No. 2 above). The best option in the case of an old boilers Heat Exchanger, if it is kettling, is a Power Flush to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned and de-scaled &/or a replacement Heat Exchanger in adition to the Power Flushing of the whole systems Primary Water (i.e the circulation pump, valves, pipe-work, radiators, etc.).

The Secondary/Potable Tap Water, really requires treatment to stop the build of lime-scale &/or chalk, either by the use of a water softener or a Lime-Scale Reducer. (Also see Plumbing Section for further details about these)
